Creative Zones
Featuring breathtaking art deco styling and an interior with a series of interlocking ramps, bridges, elevated walkways, and meandering corridors, the building in the northern district of Shanghai was once the largest abattoir in the Far East.
It became a pharmaceutical factory from the 1970s before being left empty in 2002. And now it has been renamed 1933 for the year it was built and is in the process of being converted into what the developers have called a centre for design, lifestyle, and learning.
The project has been touted as a creative hub which will feature a tenant mix of design and creative firms, retailers, restaurants and bars, galleries, and educational enterprises. 1933 will focus on a holistic lifestyle, defined not so much by material wealth but by a greater appreciation for design, culture, arts, learning, and desire for inspirational experiences, said Paul Liu, chairman and co-founder of Axons Concepts, the firm behind the restoration and management of the development.
At the launch event for 1933, Liu was at pains to stress that the development was not merely a high-end F&B and retail hub. What we are really looking for is something special, creative, and innovative, he said, we want to make this a creative destination.
The development consists of four buildings the three buildings adjoining the former abattoir including a power plant with stunning art deco details - with a total of 3,500 sq metres of space.
